Going to the dogs, off-leash, near Heather Gardens

Prospective residents often ask if dogs are allowed at Heather Gardens. The answer is a resounding “yes.”  People walking – and responsibly picking up after – their properly leashed dogs along the beautiful, park-like grounds of Heather Gardens are a common sight.

But for dogs that occasionally yearn to break free from their leashes and romp with other dogs, there’s a big plus to living at Heather Gardens. The community is just a five-minute drive from one of metro Denver’s largest off-leash dog parks.

Colorado State Parks & Wildlife offers a 107-acre fenced dog off-leash area at Cherry Creek State Park, located off Parker Road in the southeast section of the park. There’s plenty of room for pooches to run, and many of them delight in splashing in the creek that runs through the off-leash area.

Vehicle entry to the park requires a valid park day-pass or an annual park pass. Colorado residents age 64 or older can obtain an annual Aspen Leaf Pass for $60; at Cherry Creek, an annual $3 water basin authority decal is so is required.

A $2 per day pass allows one handler to bring in up to three dogs.

An annual off-leash pass costing $20 per year allows one handler from a household to bring up to three dogs at a time. The pass is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

The designated off-leash area meets the requirements of the landowner, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to ensure responsible use of land and water.

Fees may be subject to change. For more information on the off-leash area or the Aspen Leaf Pass, visit

New RTD R Line light rail train testing underway

Train testing for the Regional Transportation District’s new R line is underway. RTD says the timetable for starting service has been pushed back from December to an unspecified date in 2017.

The R Line’s Iliff Station, east of I-225 at Iliff Avenue and Blackhawk Street, will be within several blocks of Heather Gardens. For those who drive to the station, the parking structure, currently under construction, will accommodate 600 vehicles.

The R Line is a 10.5 mile extension of rail line from the existing Nine Mile station north to the University of Colorado A Line to Denver International Airport. The R Line also will provide connections to the H, E and F rail lines. For more information on fares and schedules, visit

Part of RTD’s integrated testing process includes running a light rail train under its own power. As RTD Public Relations Sr. Manager Nate Currey explains, “Before we open the line for service, we test all the elements of the rail system to verify that the construction produced a safe and reliable operating rail line. This will include testing of the train and traffic equipment at all the crossings and intersections within the city of Aurora.”

Heather Gardens Clubhouse Turns 4

September 28, 2016 marked the fourth anniversary of the dedication ceremonies for the new Heather Gardens Clubhouse – the activities, fitness and social hub of the Heather Gardens community.

The huge new facility was the result of the HG homeowners’ willingness to invest in a center that made it the biggest and best of its kind among area active-adult communities. In April 2010 the estimated 3,500 residents of Heather Gardens, the second-largest 55+ active-adult community in Colorado, approved plans for the 50,000-square-foot clubhouse. Ground was broken in April 2011.

The new Heather Gardens Clubhouse is approximately 20,000 square feet larger than the old one and features a new indoor pool with lap lanes and exercise area, a remodeled golf pro shop, new tennis courts, an updated full-service restaurant and a state-of-the-art fitness facility. The center also provides a larger auditorium, more class and activity spaces and a lounge terrace with outdoor seating.

Nearby Regatta Plaza, Anchored By King Soopers Sets Sail On A Reinvigorated Future

Regatta Plaza, home to a King Soopers grocery store near Heather Gardens, is being redeveloped. The once bustling center had become plagued with vacant retail space and fading upkeep. Despite the center’s decline, its anchor tenant, King Soopers, along with a branch of Key Bank, stayed put, helping sustain the center.

Regatta Plaza is part of the City of Aurora and Aurora Urban Renewal Authority’s Nine Mile Station Urban Renewal Plan. The authority recently took title to 14 acres of the 22-acre parcel at Parker Road and I-225, where RTD’s Nine Mile light rail line is located. Demolition work began this spring.

Upon completion, the multi-phased redevelopment of Regatta Plaza, to be renamed The Point at Nine Mile Station, is expected to take five years. It will feature more than 100,000 square feet of retail space, up to 250,000 square feet of commercial space, and residential buildings.

In addition, both King Soopers and Key Bank will be relocated to the new site. Plans currently call for the new King Soopers to be double the size of the previous store when it opens in fall of 2017.

King Soopers will start construction of its new store by the end of 2016. King Soopers and Key Bank are expected to remain open at their current locations during the construction of their new facilities in the initial phase of  the redevelopment.
