Regatta Plaza, home to a King Soopers grocery store near Heather Gardens, is being redeveloped. The once bustling center had become plagued with vacant retail space and fading upkeep. Despite the center’s decline, its anchor tenant, King Soopers, along with a branch of Key Bank, stayed put, helping sustain the center.

Regatta Plaza is part of the City of Aurora and Aurora Urban Renewal Authority’s Nine Mile Station Urban Renewal Plan. The authority recently took title to 14 acres of the 22-acre parcel at Parker Road and I-225, where RTD’s Nine Mile light rail line is located. Demolition work began this spring.

Upon completion, the multi-phased redevelopment of Regatta Plaza, to be renamed The Point at Nine Mile Station, is expected to take five years. It will feature more than 100,000 square feet of retail space, up to 250,000 square feet of commercial space, and residential buildings.

In addition, both King Soopers and Key Bank will be relocated to the new site. Plans currently call for the new King Soopers to be double the size of the previous store when it opens in fall of 2017.

King Soopers will start construction of its new store by the end of 2016. King Soopers and Key Bank are expected to remain open at their current locations during the construction of their new facilities in the initial phase of  the redevelopment.
